Roads were closed heading north to Norseman and west to Esperance. We kept a close watch on the fires as our trip could put us in the vicinity of them and we may have needed to take another route. Fire watches were <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dfes.wa.gov.au\/safetyinformation\/fire\/bushfire\/pages\/firedangerratings.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">upgraded to catastrophic and downgraded to watch and act <\/a><\/span>back again as the fire services bravely and tirelessly fought to control the larger fire in the Esperance area; the smaller fires further north were controlled and presented no threat. Despite the unfortunate loss of lives and crops and farmland as well as flora and fauna the fire services did a great job in bringing the fires under control without further loss of lives.<\/p>\n<p>So, here we are, it&#8217;s 7.00 am Saturday and we&#8217;re on our way, first stop Hyden and we&#8217;ll make camp at The Breakaways on the new Hyden to Norseman Road. We&#8217;ve camped here three times before but today we&#8217;re just passing through. We&#8217;ve never seen any emus here either but today was different. The track is lined on both sides with dense shrubs and as emus do, one just darted out in front of us, luckily we avoided him. These guys have no road sense whatsoever. That&#8217;s when we saw the litter left by previous campers, an empty bottle of alcohol. Maybe they were too drunk to remember to take their rubbish out with them. Littering is a disgusting habit anywhere but it always looks worse when you&#8217;re in a pristine spot like this. Being glass, it&#8217;s prone to being broken meaning animals or other campers could be injured or if knocked over small animals could get caught in the bottle. C&#8217;mon fellow campers &#8211; please take your rubbish with you.<\/p>\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n<h6><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>Sunday, 22nd November 2015<\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>We woke up to a beautiful day and went for a walk before breaky. A walk up to the top of the breakaway nearest our camp, revealed a nice view. Back on the road we head for the Old Hyden &#8211; Norseman Road to clear some more trees. On our last trip along this road we had marked some trees to clear. We clear trees so others can travel the track closer to it&#8217;s original bearing and this will allow the &#8220;go arounds&#8221; to recover.<\/p>\n<p>With the weather warming up the goannas, lizards and snakes are starting to come out and enjoy the warmth. On our way to McDermid Rock for morning tea we spot a snake on the road near Lake Johnson but by the time we chuck a uey he&#8217;s gone. While at McDermid Rock we spotted some egg like sacs on the trunk of a Salmon Gum, we think they&#8217;re spider eggs. McDermid Rock\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Speaking of spiders always check the toilets at camping spots and rest areas, spiders like to seek refuge in the cool of the toilet. There was a redback with a moth in her web which immediately reminded me of &#8216;Slim&#8217; Newton&#8217;s song Redback on the Toilet Seat &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;There was a red-back on the toilet seat, When I was there last night,<br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t see him in the dark, But boy! I felt his bite!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of interest even though the species is called a Red Back Spider it&#8217;s only the female who has the red on her back. The smaller male who is often brown rather than black does not have a red mark. Unfortunately he generally will only get one opportunity to mate with the female due to either being mistaken for prey and eaten or during the act of mating the female may dissolve and eat his abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>Now heading along the Old Hyden &#8211; Norseman Road it&#8217;s not long before we come across our first tree to clear. This tree and the next two were newly fallen trees since our last run out this way. The day was warm reaching 40deg Celsius by the time we were on our 4th and largest tree ( the first on our list ). Doing these by hand axe and saw we decided to call it a day after the 4th one. There&#8217;s always plenty to see and some small challenges to tackle whether its wet or dry. The insects included an Imposter Sleepy Cockroach but not your kitchen variety, a large Jewel Beetle and a big bull ant. The Jewel Beetle we saw is one of the many varieties which vary in both size and color. This particular beetle is known for something a little odd in the insect world. <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.australiangeographic.com.au\/blogs\/creatura-blog\/2015\/05\/australias-beer-loving-jewel-beetle\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Geographic<\/a><\/span> magazine did a story on them where it reported that the male jewel beetle is renowned for mating with stubbies, not the shorts but the brown beer bottles. We left it on the bonnet overnight after using the other one. As the bag was lifted up, guess what?? Bees had settled along the edges and underneath the bag. We reckon there was about 80 &#8211; 100 bees. The procedure from here had to be slow and careful so we didn&#8217;t annoy them. Trees fallen on the track mean people have made go arounds; we clear a few each time we&#8217;re out this way so in time the track will follow it&#8217;s original path and nature can reclaim the go arounds.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned yesterday the track is deteriorating and the next section we came across required some care. It was a lumpy section with cracks and some drop offs at the side. All was going well when suddenly the front LH wheel slipped off, the RH rear popped up and we dropped into the crack. We recovered having only scratched the side step but looking ahead we decided not to continue so we reversed up and took a track off to our left. Just before we hit the Kalgoorlie &#8211; Norseman Road we turned to the right to follow the old Telegraph Track into Norseman. The going was slow and after a point we reached a spot where too many trees blocked the track. As we were only a few metres off the Kalgoorlie &#8211; Norseman Road we back tracked to a point where we could return to the highway. The Esperance &#8211; Norseman Road was only opened the day before we left on this trip. We&#8217;ve been traveling this road for 30 odd years and as recently as 5 mths ago. To ease the shakes and rattles of the corrugations we slowed to as low as 18kph. Just past Peak Charles we&#8217;d had enough and turned on to a track on our left and tripled our speed , traveling up to 55kmp. When you&#8217;re in this region Peak Charles can be seen from pretty much all directions and tracks when your around 50kms from it. We pulled into a rest area just north of Ravensthorpe and set up camp just in time. The wind picked up, lightning lit up the sky and the thunder made it hard to hear each other talk, then the rain fell. It rained and the wind blew all night but our Caribee Spider pop up tent kept us dry, a good buy.<\/p>\n<!--nextpage-->\n<h6><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>Tuesday, 24th November 2015<\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>It was overcast in the morning and breaking camp was slow so we could allow the tent to dry a little before packing it away. Being close to Ravensthorpe we had internet access but only if we put the dongal in a tree. This rest area is part of the Overshot Hill Nature Reserve and has some tables and chairs and a couple of pit BBQs. Along the way in we passed a couple of mines on the outskirts of town. If you&#8217;re ever in Ravensthorpe you&#8217;ve got to check out the <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/storecatalogue.iga.com.au\/store\/ravensthorpe-iga-0.html\" target=\"_blank\">IGA<\/a><\/span> there. It&#8217;s a great shop that sells everything from food to camping gear and hardware, they even had a brand of recovery boards similar to max trax.<br \/>\nHeading east out of Ravensthorpe they were completing a huge roundabout which feeds onto the new Heavy Haulage bypass road. Once on the South West Hwy we turned onto Carlingup and then left onto Woodinup Track ( not to be confused with Woodenup Road ). The Woodinup Track is only about 10kms long and was an easy run. At the end we turned on Nindilbilup Road and just after passing through the Rabbit Poof Fence we met up with Dunns Track and headed for our little camp spot. We saw some Ground Shield Bugs, very colorful little guys. They are a type of Jewel Bug and native to Australia. Even though this is the first time we&#8217;ve seen them they are quite common. Now even though we were about 100kms inland from the southern coast we also saw quite a few sea shells. We enjoyed the rest of the day and evening here. Among the birds we saw were a couple of Rainbow Bee-eaters and we managed to get a photo of one. They very quick in the morning catching bugs. Now by comparison, Coujinup Track is &#8216;worse&#8217; than Woodinup Track although it wasn&#8217;t difficult. It was just a bit tight in places especially as we were about to cross the Oldfield River, which was dry where the track crossed the riverbed but had some pools of water in it. The ant is venomous and native to Australia. They have a very nasty bite and can cause an anaphylactic shock in some people. Be careful of these little guys when you&#8217;re out an about in the south west of WA. We took a bush track to Cascade Road and then turned left on Cascade Road. From here we passed through Frank Hann National Park. The end result was that we ended up on the Lake King &#8211; Norseman Road. We were now on our final leg home. As we approached Wagin we were treated to a lovely sunset, much better than you see in the city.
