There had been some rain out in the Southern Goldfields but not enough to cause any dramas with mud or deep water. At the moment we do not have a snorkel fitted to the Pajero however with the Cooper AT3s and with its proven traction in mud from our previous trips, the mud would have to be pretty bad to cause us any problems.<\/p>\n<p>As we were heading out along Brookton Hwy, about 40kms from home, we saw a shape up ahead on the road. It looked like an eagle but we haven&#8217;t seen Eagles ( or Dockers ) out this way for about 30 odd years and reasoned it may be a goshawk or kite. We slowed a little as we approached to give it time to fly off. As we got closer it took off and we saw its unmistakable tail which confirmed is was in fact a wedge tailed eagle. Unfortunately there was a vehicle coming up behind us and a couple coming toward us so we didn&#8217;t get a photo but we were glad we saw it. <\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re magnificent birds with adults having a wing span of up to 2.3mts. The female is larger than the male and adults tend to be very dark brown\/black while juveniles and young adults are lighter in color. When in flight they&#8217;re easily distinguished from the Little Eagle by looking at the tail. Both are found all over Australia. As a result of vehicles hitting mammals and smaller birds the wedge tail will feed on carrion and this can unfortunately bring about it&#8217;s own demise if the carrion is on or close to the road. Due to their large wing span they need a fair bit of time to take off and gain a safe height, this is why we always slow down when we see them feeding on or near the side of the road. We ask you to please do the same.<\/p>\n<p>We continued on to Hyden where we topped up the tank and headed for McDermid Rock, our camp for the night. We arrived with a few hours to spare before sunset so relaxed taking photos of the local wildlife. There is an enviro toilet and 3 or 4 camp sites. If you have time take the walk trail to the top of McDermid Rock and enjoy views, they also have information signs along the way. Once at the top the view is good especially as sunset. We walked up to get some sunset photos and were surprised by the amount of gnamma holes with water still in them. We were a couple of days short of the full moon however we did get some photos of the moon while the sun was setting. On the way back to camp we spotted a Granite Bottlebrush and in the fading light grabbed a photo.<\/p>\n<p>Back at camp we had tea and relaxed enjoying the evening being serenaded by the A twenty eight greeted us from his perch in a nearby tree. It was reasonably cool overnight with a heavy dew fall and it seems some spitfires were trying to dry out on our ground sheet. As we moved around camp our little bull skink friend popped out to grab some sun as well. As the sun warmed up the day we saw many Painted Dragons scurrying across our path and we were happy to spot one sunning himself on a tree stump, almost posing for us. Sometimes you just get stuck, they don&#8217;t seem like much and some aren&#8217;t even deep but once the surface tension is broken they can suck you in pretty quickly.<br \/>\n\n\t\t<style We continued on until we came across a point where we had to get off the Old Hyden &#8211; Norseman Road due to a section that was impassable. This was the cause of the Pajero popping its right hand wheel high into the air. Just shows that the Pajero will power over just about anything. Just after turning North we came across a long mud\/puddle which looked very treacherous, so stopped the Pajero, jumped out and took a look about. Sweet a go around on the right side, which we walked down for a couple of meters and it looked so smooth and solid. Decision made, we will take the go around. This is were we got a huge surprise as we passed about a meter in front of the point that we had walked to the Pajero literally nose dived into a pool of mud. Damm! the go around was just a mud filled pool with a hard surface of mud to temp the wary driver. Well the Cooper AT3s came to the rescue again with their great mud traction and we where able to go forward a meter, back up 2 meters, repeat and slowly work our way through the mud till we hit hard ground again. Mud, Mud and more Mud. Lesson learned. The track started off being easy to see but after a few kms<br \/>\nthe track started to petered out. Still traveling along it we came a across a log that needed to be move from the track and as the log was turned over we spotted a Giant Centipede in the damp crevice of the log so we took a photo and let him be (we turned the log back to its original facing with care not to squash the Giant Centipede ) Note: Take care Centipedes can have a poisonous bite. We continued on trying to pick up the track but couldn&#8217;t. As it was getting late in the day and light was fading fast we decided that we would head back to a spot we&#8217;d seen before and earmarked as a potential camp spot. We set up camp and settled in for the night, so too did a thunder storm. Solid rain for 4 or so hours. We drifted off to sleep listening to the rain and thunder and seeing the lightening flashes. We turned onto the road we came in on last night and had only traveled about 50mts when we slid for about a meter down into a rut down. We had follow the same tyre marks that we had left from the day before but had not taken into account the rain from last night and the effect it would have on the track namely muddying it up. Oh well we turned the rear locker on and dropped into low range and in no time we where back on firm ground. After driving through one muddy bog hole we stopped to set up the car kettle for a cuppa and noticed all the leaf litter that had attached itself to the mud on the tyres and wound around the axle. They also make a mean burger and the new owners are very friendly. Like most of the goldfields region of WA gold was found near Widgie in the 1890&#8217;s and the town was gazetted in 1897 under the name Widgemooltha ( No I after the G ). In 1944 the spelling was changed to the current version. The name is derived from an Aboriginal word thought to be the name of a nearby hill and rock hole. It was during Australia&#8217;s depression that the largest nugget ever found in Australia was unearthed by a young 17 yr old lad who had only been prospecting for 2 days. After a short rest we set up camp. Cave Hill is another lovely spot to camp especially when it&#8217;s not crowded. It has eco toilets and bbqs. You can enjoy a walk to view the actual cave. In years gone by you walk into the cave but nowadays it&#8217;s off limits although you still get  a reasonable view from the viewing platform. There are 3 separate camp grounds within the Cave Hill reserve. Cave Hill rock has several dams on top which still catch water. After tea and an enjoyable evening watching the sun set we retired. Wow! we thought we&#8217;d seen the last of the puddles for this trip but we were wrong. Puddle after puddle greeted us for about the first 10 kms and the going was a bit slow. A bit further down the track we came across a long puddle and got out to walk it. Lucky we did. The line through the puddle dropped off on the right hand side to a depth we weren&#8217;t comfortable negotiating so we turned around and headed back to Cave Hill where we had left 2 hours before. We slowed to allow them to move away which they did. As we got closer we could see one was a pregnant mare and the other a foal. The term Brumby is thought to have originated in the Australian Alps when a settler by the name of James Brumby let his horses run free. They adapted to the Australian landscape and inter bred with other breeds of horses including Clydesdales, Arabians, Draft horses and others. They developed into a very hardy breed and were used by the Australian Army in the Boer (South Africa), First and Second World Wars. Today the topic of Brumbies brings up strong feelings on both sides of an argument. But we would do it all again and soon will.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the journey home was pretty straight forward although we did encounter a thunderstorm west of Southern Cross all the way to Merredin.
