The track now passes North of Dog Rock. The above map shows our route in blue and the original in green. We tried 3 times to find the original track. The first time at Dog Rock we could not find any trace, the second time we turned down Neds Corner Road and again found no trace, on the third time near Bearing Marker 279 we found traces of the old route but it was heavily over grown with shrubs and could not be traveled along. We agreed it would be back to the Norseman region of WA?s goldfields. A search for 4WD tracks in the area turned up Dunn?s Track so we locked it in.<\/p>\n<p>The track has been plotted and loaded into the Hema, the car is packed and by 7.00am we?re off. The first leg is Perth to Hyden via Brookton Hwy where we fill up the truck and our ?jerry cans?. This leg was uneventful, next leg we head to McDermid Rock to camp for the night. We turn on to the new Hyden ? Norseman Road and about 60kms down the road we spot a snake on the road. Excited by the chance to grab some photos we went to grab the camera off the back seat. This wasn?t as easy as first thought so hubby got out of the car to get the camera. He got it and started walking back to the front seat when all of a sudden I heard ?Oh Sh&#8230;..? Now Superman can leap tall buildings in a single bound and I can tell you hubby leapt from near the front door to the back door step rail in a single bound \ud83d\ude0e while telling me that snake had gone!! I had a look and couldn?t see him anywhere. Reasoning it must have made its way off into the bush hubby tentatively made his way back to the front door and got in. We were a bit concerned the snake could have coiled up under the car for warmth but neither of us was ready to check underneath just yet and we were sure he couldn?t have ?jumped? into the car. We settled down and took off disappointed at our missed photo opportunity. First task for us was to have a cuppa and relax for a few ticks. Once at the top of McDermid Rock you?re treated to a spectacular 360? view of the region. You can see Lake Johnston and glimpse Lake Hope. We could also hear frogs at most larger pools of water but couldn?t see them. The car awning was wet through and so was the tent fly. Packing up will take a bit longer this morning while we wait for them to dry out a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Today?s itinerary is to head off down the old Hyden ? Norseman Road to clear some trees (Something we now do each time where out this way and maybe one day the road will be totally cleared) on our way to Norseman to top up the tank and head to Peak Charles to camp for the night.<\/p>\n<p>We?re on the road by 8.30am and not long after (about 9.00am) we come across our first tree to clear. We started off by sawing and chopping branches off to make it a bit lighter and then got the winch out to do the rest. This time it was two trunks side by side, we went straight for the winch; these two were easier. All done we?re back on the road and I take over the driving. I backed off the power and steered away but lost momentum and got bogged about 1 cars length from the end. Oh well at least I didn?t hit the bush. I had a look and said ?What tree?? but clipped it with a thump which knocking the backing of the passenger side mirror. We stop and pop it back on ? all?s good. Still going nowhere on this go around we back track and hubby takes over to go through the big puddle ? Huh!! Too easy, should?ve just gone through in the first place and spared the mirror \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Bogged record D-1 C-2<\/p>\n<p>We continue along toward Norseman but progress has been slow due to track conditions. The Restaurant here is named after Laurie Sinclair (Sinclair&#8217;s) whose horse ?Norseman? is credited with finding the first nugget of gold and so the town of Norseman was founded in 1894. The puddles came thick and fast and this continued for most of the way making our progress slow. Ahh! We continued on and Dunns Track dried out a little and became sandy for a while but the roadside vegetation was still dense. Up ahead we saw some movement that looked like a bird and as we got closer we saw that it was an emu. Now we know these guys are ?stupid? to say the least and a bit scatty and erratic so we slowed to allow him time to run off into the bush. Nothing doing, he kept jogging down the road looking back every so often as if to say ?you can?t catch me I?m the gingerbread man?. Not so&#8230; around the next bend there he is still jogging along the middle of the track still looking back with an ?I?m winning? grin on his beak. The track widened and we eventually got past him and a check in the rear view mirror showed him still jogging off into the bush.<\/p>\n<p>We continue looking for a spot to camp and come across a possible site but a closer look reveals the ground as a rock so we push on. We take a photo of one of the nocturnal ground spiders. As we sit enjoying the silence of the bush we get buzzed by a bird then we hear shrieking, gee what a sound, you?d swear someone was being choked. There were 3 fences, #1, #2 &amp; #3. It has also been known as the State Vermin and Emu fence. When passing through the gates it is important you shut the gate as per the signs ? we comply.<\/p>\n<p>Once through the gate we stop to reinflate the tyres ready for the bitumen and faster gravel. While here we spot a lone grasshopper but not your average garden variety. This one is ?pretty? and has two short lacy white wings on its back.
