We decided just after getting back from Mt Elvire that we&#8217;d do the Holland Track on our holidays and here we are &#8230;<br \/>\nAs we have time on our side we&#8217;ve decided to take a leisurely drive, setting up camp mid arvo if possible and relaxing into the evening while stopping along the way to enjoy the scenery, wildflowers and wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>As part of our trip preparation and research, we calculated on 5kpl for the Holland Track section and carried extra diesel just in case. We ensured we had a full range of tools including tyre repair kit, tubes for emergency use only and an axe and shovel. Oops! forgot the googs, we&#8217;ll buy some on the way. Hmph, no we wont, it seems news of Colin&#8217;s extended retail hours didn&#8217;t reach Brookton, Corrigin or Hyden.<\/p>\n<p>About 20kms out of Corrigin we come across a wide load convoy so we jump onto CH40 and touch base with them. They let us know they&#8217;re turning in 2.8kms so we hang on &#8211; no need to pass. We thank them and continue on. We arrive in Hyden around midday, top up the tank and the jerry cans and head for the Holland Track.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way we stop at the State Barrier Fence before continuing along new Hyden-Norseman Rd to the turnoff for Holland Track and Emu Rocks our camp for the night. The State Barrier Fence was formerly known as the Rabbit Proof Fence, Emu and vermin proof fence. We go for a walk down to a nearby salt lake and Emu Rocks before setting up camp. Although it was only 15 kms away it took us an hour to reach Sheok Rocks. Once again there were puddles of water on the rock and these ones had taddies in them. We stopped for a cuppa at Sandalwood Rocks. <em>NB:The area is now barren of sandalwood trees thanks to over logging. By 9.45am we&#8217;d done 48kms, confirming the track is easier up the north eastern end. Way too close to get photos so we got some photos when the bushes receded a little. We have a couple more spots to check out &#8211; Pigeon Hole &amp; Victoria Rock &#8211; before hitting the Victoria Rock Road (gravel). Went for a walk around town, seems quieter than we recall from the past, grab some supplies, and yes we got googs \ud83d\ude42 and headed back to our room for a cuppa before heading out for tea.<\/p>\n<p>Wow! the restaurant at the motel was lovely, had an extensive menu and we both enjoyed our meals. We&#8217;re pretty pleased with that. We grabbed some ice creams and a drink and the 4WD Action magazine. The young lad at the counter mentioned that it wasn&#8217;t the latest mag, and offered to get the current one from the back. He was very polite and helpful, we&#8217;ll fill up there next time were out this way. Oh well, we worry about it after our walk. The walk up Burra Rock was pleasant and at the top was a huge body of water and remnants of a dam wall. The water was used to fuel the steam trains transporting timber to Kalgoorlie back in the &#8217;20s &amp; 30&#8217;s. We couldn&#8217;t find any at Hyden or Coolgardie and thought the days of the humble car sticker, postcard, teaspoon and fridge magnets were long gone, but not here, so we bought a selection. Well done and thanks guys for stocking souveniers \ud83d\ude0e<\/p>\n<p>The Woodlines Track out to Cave Hill was worse in parts than the Holland Track. Part of the track is elevated which is where the original tracks were. We reach Cave Hill around 1.00pm, there&#8217;s another couple camping there. We pick a spot in the campground at the back of Cave Hill, have lunch and then go for a walk. We see heaps of water in 2 of the 3 dams and the &#8220;cave&#8221; is interesting. Cave Hill to Mc Dermid Rock\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>The Woodlines is less travelled than Holland Track; an indicator being the number of fallen trees accross the track which don&#8217;t have go arounds. We get the axe and saw out several times to clear the track. We did this even if there were go arounds for the smaller trees but there were a couple which were just too big ( needed a chainsaw ) so we used the exisitng go around. We were saddened to see where a car(s) and motorbike(s) had been across the rock and clearly left their mark and damaged the rock &#8211; WHY?? :'( Once again there was water at the top of Banks Rock and as with most of the &#8220;rocks&#8221; in the area there were heaps of little dragons sunning and running all over the rock. We pull in, it&#8217;s not a good spot for us and our tent &#8211; not a lot of shade. We&#8217;re heading to McDermid Rock and on the way we see a salt lake (un-named per our map) with what appears to be two red hills on the banks. We take a closer look; it looks like someone has dug a hole into the salt lake and dumped the sand causing the &#8220;red hills&#8221; and creating a deep hole of water. Now this could be a swimming hole or used by nearby mines for water.Hmm.. no wonder the salt lake is dry.<\/p>\n<p>About 1.30pm we arrive a McDermid Rock and settle in for the day. The bushes at the side of the road encroached over making it narrower than the width of our car. It would be fair to say most of the travellers along these tracks would be 4WDers which doesn&#8217;t bode well for the reputation of 4WDers if some are littering. We carried our accumulated rubbish ( 4 bags ) since starting the Holland Track to Coolgardie to dispose of and again we are now carrying rubbish until we reach a suitable bin. To see the broken bottles, beer cans stuck in trees, white ribbons (aka toilet paper) and other litter out here is annoying and sickening not to mention any harm litter could cause local wildlife. One of these was on the left hand side of the road and could pose a problem if you&#8217;re driving too fast.<\/p>\n\n<p>After negotiating a few more track conditions we stopped just before turning onto the Coolgardie &#8211; Esperance road to have some lunch and pump up the tyres before hitting the bitumen on our run into Norseman. It has taken us just shy of 5hrs to do the 120kms of the old Hyden-Norseman road. Just as we turn off the bitumen to head into the Peak Charles National Park we check the mobile phone and found that by holding your tongue right and pointing the phone to the sky we had enough service to send and receive a couple of texts &#8211; who&#8217;d have thought? Norseman road ( approx 277 km). We pass Lake Hope on the way out. This section was uneventful but provided a lovely wildflower display along the way. The bushes at the side of the road were bending at almost 90 degrees when the wind was at it&#8217;s strongest. About 50kms out of Hyden the temperature dropped to 20 degrees, the sky is turning gray and the wind is still blowing, off goes the air con. Another 30 odd kms down the road and it starts raining. Pink and grays, wood doves, red tailed cockies and 28&#8217;s flock for a drink at the little puddles on the road. Another 15 mins and the temperature has dropped to 12 degrees &#8211; time for a cuppa to warm up.
