Cape Arid – Mt. Ragged and Surrounds

Day 9 Norseman to Home

Saturday, 27th December 2014

Today the plan is to head out along the old Norseman to Hyden Road. We fill up and go to grab some supplies from IGA but they don?t open until 8.30am. We have a little look around town and head up to Beacon Hill Lookout. Not a bad view, you get a 360deg view. Keep an eye out on the way up or down for the tailings on both sides of the road. One side is slowly being revegetated but on the other side it looks like a scene out of a sci fi movie where they?ve landed on a barren planet. A huge grey wall reaches skyward for about 50mts ( The gray tailings are from Phoenix Mine )

We turn onto the Old Norseman ? Hyden track and within 500mts we encounter our first 3 newly fallen trees. Not again, I wasn?t keen on another day of moving trees so hubby kindly offered to head back and take the New Norseman ? Hyden road, I?m a woos I know. There is plenty of evidence of a storm going through here too, some of the trees literally snapped in two.

Not long into the New Norseman ? Hyden road we see dust a dust trail in the distance and it closing in pretty quick. We slow down again and another invincible 4WD traveller towing a pretty large caravan is flying along in excess of 100kph and travelling down the middle of the road as if it?s for his use only. Now this road is in better condition than the other two we?ve just been on but the difference here is that this road is also used by truckies with up to 3 trailers ? hate to meet on a bend. As chance would have it the next vehicle we encounter is a semi, also flying along. We see another sand goanna crossing the road.

We come to the end of the New Hyden – Norseman road and decide to deviate down to the Old Hyden – Norseman road for a 10 odd kms to do some tree clearing ready for the next lot of travellers. The first few were fairly easy, moveable by hand and axe but one was large so we employed the winch again.

We pull in a Hyden around 1pm, nothing open except the garage, we top up the tank and grab an ice cream and continue on toward home. As our travels near the end we have mixed emotions; it?s always nice to come home but at the same time you don?t want your journey to end. It nice being away from the city and slowing down the pace of life. Now where to go next ……………….

Petrol ? Norseman $149.0 cpl we got 8.42 kpl on this leg
Petrol ? Hyden $148.0 cpl we got 13.07 kpl on this leg
