Fanny Cove and Norseman’s Bee Hive/Lake Dundas Loops

Day 3 Fanny Cove

Sunday, 20th December 2015

We woke to the hum of a mozzie who had been feeding on us overnight and she was full, it’s a wonder she could fly.

Today we’re going to enjoy the peace and tranquility of Fanny Cove. It’s a great spot for bird watching, walking or beach fishing although it could be a bit dangerous off the rocks when the ocean is crashing on them. It isn’t as windy as yesterday but sill quite blowy. Yesterday the ranger said the strong winds were unusual for this time of year. Although the wind blows the sand around it helps to keep the temperature down.

The Southern Ocean is the 4th largest ocean, the only ocean to go all around the world and also encompasses the South Pole. The Emperor Penguin makes the ice of the Southern Ocean it’s home along with Antarctica while the Wandering Albatross also call the Southern Ocean home. Although we thought it was windy at Fanny Cove and the Southern Ocean is renowned for some of the strongest winds and largest waves by comparison we were treated to a reasonably calm ocean.

We saw more Sooty Oyster Catchers than any other bird including the humble sea gull.
