Day 8 Camp along Old Hyden Norseman Road to The Breakaways

Friday, 25th December 2015

With the chainsaw charged we set off and it was only 15 minutes down the road that we came across our first tree to clear. We got four trees done in our first hour before the chainsaw battery ran out.

We continued along the old Hyden to Norseman Road noticing the deterioration as we go. There’s one section that has a reasonably large crack running along the edge and each time we travel along here the crack is a bit wider and deeper. The old Hyden Norseman Road ends or starts at the intersection of Hyden Norseman Road and Victoria Road ( used to be called Queen Victoria Road ). In the 1990’s it was decided to realign the eastern end of the old Hyden Norseman Road from Lake Johnston onward so it ends closer to Norseman rather than finishing about 20kms north of Norseman. Three hours later we reach the end of road and pull off for some lunch before heading to The Breakaways for the night. At the southern end of the old Hyden Norseman Road there is a sign warning users that the road isn’t maintained even though it appears on many maps as a normal road.

We pulled into The Breakaways around 3.00pm. It’s a nice quiet spot and the camping bays are generously spread out offering privacy. There is an Eco toilet there, tables and chairs and BBQ pits for use when fires are permitted. When we were there this time a couple of the camping bays had been closed off for regeneration. We enjoyed a peaceful evening watching the sun set and the moon rise.
